generating ‘enthusiasms’




I captured this ‘event’ in my morning commute for Glen (well, and a little bit for me re: gender and the mastery of technologies).

  2. I’ve noticed those ads. Actually, I was too busy being horrified by what people in the army get paid to think about the gendered nature of the technological messages.

    I am pretty sure that being a tank-mechanic is a gender-restricted job in the ADF. I suspect that they expect tanks to hang around on front lines in combat roles, and tank mechanics to double-up on killing people and fixing their tank when it brakes down, which makes it a front-line combat position. And women aren’t allowed to work in those, as far as I know. We are too soft and delicate to be good killers or something. That’s what the nice man from the Army who came to my high-school said, anyway.

    Or maybe they are worried that there might be ‘gender relations’ issues. Female Tank Mechanic: “Oi, who the &%^^ stole my spanner?” Male colleages: “Bloody women, always bitching and moaning. Shouldn’t you be in the kitchen?”.

    *cough*

  3. That’s a long comment for someone who is handing up tomorrow…Having seen you in action at our Extreme Bush Weekend, I have no doubt you could drive a tank/fix a helicopter with the best of ’em, and look ladylike doing it if necessary. 😉
